NUA Surgical was developed out of BioInnovate Ireland, a medical device needs-led-innovation programme based in the National University of Ireland, Galway. In 2018, our founding team were awarded an Enterprise Ireland Commercialisation Fund to bring the project from early stage concept to commercialisation.

Barry is a former BioInnovate Ireland Fellow specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology. He has a B.Comm and MSc in Medical Device Innovation from NUI Galway, and has over 15 years commercial and fundraising experience.
CTO | Co-Founder
Padraig holds a BSc in Polymer Engineering and has over 20 years industry experience with start-ups and multinationals. He also established and managed his own company in the sector for 7 years.

Marie Therese holds a BEng degree, is PMP certified and has over 15 years industry experience in a medical device multinational bringing products from concept through to commercialisation.
In December 2018, NUA Surgical was the only Irish university start-up selected to take part in the inaugural Blackstone LaunchPad Accelerator Powered by Techstars in New York.
In September 2019, NUA Surgical was selected as a regional finalist (Connacht & Leinster) in the InterTradeIreland Seedcorn competition.
In November 2019, Barry McCann, founder and CEO of NUA Surgical was named 'Best Senior Entrepreneur' at the EIT Health Alumni Needs-Led Innovation Showcase in Lisbon, Portugal.
In November 2019, NUA Surgical COO Marie-Therese Maher presents at the NUI Galway Innovation Showcase organised by the BioExel Accelerator.
In December 2019, NUA Surgical CEO Barry McCann presents on Needs-led Innovation at the 2019 EIT Health Summit in Paris, France.
CTO Padraig Maher dedicated weeks to work with hospitals, researchers and start-ups to develop a CPAP Hood for use in local hospitals. The project received further funding from Science Foundation Ireland.
